Indeed, I think the problem does not stem from defending your beliefs, rather it becomes a problem when you are unable to critically examine said beliefs in the face of contradictory evidence.

Thank you for the clarification! There's always a danger in these less structured chat-type things that because we're not really trying too hard to be rigorously clear, our meaning can be misinterpreted. So I'm glad to get that correction.

If I may impose upon you further, would you say that a major problem in the privacy "community" is an over-reliance on, or over-identification with, of a small number of solutions, leading to that difficulty critically engaging that you mention?

Hm, possibly, especially the "over-identification" aspect. I think that people like to feel validated about the choices they've already made, which can lead to them viewing any sort of 'attack' on a solution they use as an 'attack' against themselves personally, which is silly.
